Music

Colossians 3:15-17;
…..as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do,
 whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

 Stop Press (June 2009)
We really need to ease the pressure on our current musicians, or we will be reduced to singing to backing tapes.  Please contact Camilla Gosden for more information.

 Music at St John the Baptist, Wonersh.

 art music keyboard

Music forms an important part of our worship at both our churches. The main instrument at Wonersh is the Clavinova, often accompanied by instruments, with the organ often played for traditional hymns and festivals. We also make use of a screen and AV system  We blend modern and traditional hymns, and these are taken from Songs of Fellowship and elsewhere.

Music is currently organised by Camilla Gosden.  Both modern and traditional hymns are sung,  and these are taken from Songs of Fellowship (volumes 1 & 2), The Source and Junior Praise.  A choir (not robed) is formed for special occasions, such as the carol service at Christmas.

 There is an emphasis on youth at one Sunday evening service per month with U-†urn providing a band.  We are looking for musicians of any ability or age to help invigorate our worship.  Anyone interested should contact our Leader of Youth Work.

 The 2-manual 12 stop pipe organ was built in 1885 by the firm of T C Lewis for John Mitchel Courage at his parents new home in Snowdenham Hall, Bramley,  whose grandather John Courage ounded the brewing empire.  It was the last one to be built by “Grandfather” Willis.   It was almost certainly initially installed in the great hall at Snowdenham, the Courage family house in Bramley, and was presented to Wonersh church soon after the restoration in 1901.

 Music at St Martin's, Blackheath.

 In Blackheath the organ is used most Sundays, except for Family Services when a keyboard is used and more traditional hymns (Common Praise) are the norm. The Choir leads the singing at Sung Holy Communion and Evensong, and at Carol, Christmas and Easter services.

At the Holy Communion Service on the first Sunday in the month and at the Evensong on the third Sunday in the month, singing is led by the Church Choir. The Choir also sings at special services throughout the year and a larger Christmas Choir sings at the traditional Candlelit Carol Service held each December.  We use Common Praise.    Paul McCormick normally plays the organ.  Contact Patricia Allen for details of the choir.
