Seniors' Ministries

Seniors' Ministry

At St John the Baptist, Wonersh and St Martin’s, Blackheath, we deeply value the older members of our church and community. Whether you're looking for prayerful worship, gentle exercise, good conversation—or just a chance to connect—we offer a range of activities designed to support, encourage and bring joy to this stage of life.

Thursday Morning Service

Our Thursday morning service is a quiet, reflective communion service held at 10:30am in St John’s Church. Many tell us it’s the highlight of their week.

  • Followed by coffee and a chat in the Selwyn Room

  • Transport is available for those who need it

  • On the first Thursday of each month, we hold a more informal version with discussion and refreshments

Whether you're a regular churchgoer or just exploring, this is a warm and welcoming place to pause and pray together midweek.

The Walking Group

The Walking Group is for those in or nearing retirement who want to stay active and connected. It’s a brilliant way to:

  • Enjoy gentle local walks in the beauty of each season

  • Share friendship and conversation

  • End with a good pub lunch!

We currently organise six walks a year, open to all with moderate walking ability. To join the mailing list or find out about the next outing, contact:

Seasonal Gatherings & “Mini Breaks”

We hold special midweek celebrations at Christmas and Easter, with a short, accessible service followed by tea and cake.

Twice a year we also run our popular “Mini Breaks”—afternoons of food, fun, creativity, and friendship for seniors from across the parish. These are a wonderful way to meet others and enjoy a change of pace.

Daytime Connect Groups

We have several daytime Connect Groups that offer a supportive, caring space to explore faith, study the Bible, and share life with others.

These groups may especially suit seniors and those who prefer to meet during the day.

Pastoral Care & Home Communion

Our clergy and pastoral team offer regular visits and home communion for those who are unwell or unable to come to church. We are here to listen, pray, and support however we can.

Transport Help

We have a number of kind volunteers who offer lifts to church or weekday events for those who don’t drive. If you’d benefit from this—or would like to help—please get in touch via the Parish Office.

Age Concern Lunches

Age Concern hosts weekly lunches at Lawnsmead Hall, open to seniors in the wider community. It’s a brilliant chance to share a home-cooked meal and meet others.
